Pendeford Bridge to Hunting Bridge - just under 2 miles

Thursday: G woke me at 1.00am as he was scrabbling about on the roof trying to secure nefarious items that were rolling around in the wind - I think one of those items might have been a solar panel.....hmmm.....
On top of that, of course, MR was bouncing on the ledge in the wind.
Around 11.00am Lesley walked F & F up towards Brewood and found some moorings with rings and no ledges, this is a rare treat on this canal. So she suggested we moved the boats up for a more peaceful night and we readily agreed. But it's all Lesley's fault.
Somehow, in trying to get MR off the side against the wind, we managed to get the back end of MR on the ledge and out of the water at a most alarming angle. All I could think of was the ballast we'd removed below and the tons of wood on the roof - it did occur to me that, if we were going to lose our home, I might as well whip out my camera and sieze the dramatic opportunity for the blog; but G might have thought I was being insensitive so I resisted!

After all this trauma, and with both boats moved up and safely moored, Lesley and I set off on a circular walk  incorporating Brewood on the way home.

This beautifully ballustraded bridge is called Avenue Bridge, as it crosses the canal through an avenue of trees leading to Chillington Hall home of the Giffard family since the 12th Century. Evidently the existing hall was built in the 18thC. Little doubt that the Giffards sponsored this  ornate bridge. Lesly and I, weather permitting, will be exploring the avenue and its extensive parklands tomorrow.

  1. I've mentioned this to Lesley too, but you need a leaflet produced by the Shropshire Union Canal Society, listing all their country moorings. They've installed useful things like rings and benches at lots of places along the Shroppie. They're not all free from the Shroppie shelf, but many of them are.
