Beetling upstream to Bedford

We stopped off in St Ives for some shopping and a bite to eat - leaving MR outside the pub on the quay - no prizes for guessing who came into the pub. It's now in the hands of the police.

Travelling much further and faster than we would normally as we were trying to get to Bedford with Dainion before he was collected on Saturday. The Gods were not however in our favour; just as we steamed through St Neots, Dainion said that Muttley was licking his paw a lot. Closer inspection revealed an abscess due to the usual  culprit at this time of the year,  the dreaded grass seed, so it was an about turn and back to St Neots to find a vet. They were wonderful and attended to him very quickly without any nonsense.

By the time we reached Gt Barford lock the wind defeated us and we "arrived" on the mooring and gave it up.

When the weather improved, we moved on a little way on the Sunday morning and moored on this most idyllic island. This has to be perfection.

However, then the rainy season hit us and the river rose and it rained ...and it rained... and the EA man said we wouldn't get under the bridge at Bedford so we decided discretion was the better part of valour and that we'd leave that cruise for another time and retreated back to St Neots in search of a "rise & fall" pontoon.

  1. Hi Jill & Graham,
We felt that we had to support you after reading that you had been harassed by Mr S Mist.
We had a nice evening with you in the Foley Arms, Napton a year or two ago, and we know you would not cause offence to anyone. I can imagine that this sort of behaviour from another boater, or anyone else for that matter, can be very upsetting for you.
We just wanted you to know that we were behind you in your actions. You should not have to put with that.
    Kindest Regards
    Graham & Patricia

  2. One short paragraph about the twat, then loads of great photos. Sounds like you manage to keep a good balance, well done!

  3. Graham & Patricia, thank you for your support and how lovely to hear from you again. We think it was around March ish 2008 - we could, of course, be a year (or two) out. Hope you are both well and still enjoying the waterways - you would be surprised about how often you crop up in our anecdotes. Shall you be out this year? We think we might be Shroppie this winter and Thames/Kennet & A next summer, but who knows. It would be great to meet up again.

  4. Dear Richard & Sue. Well, what fantastic photos you guys have been putting up - you are so adventurous; I feel very timid by comparison. I'm, frankly, not prepared to give the twat any more air time. I hope you guys are starting to look to the good times with Blue - life can be horrid. I'm just worrying, for you two, when your foster period ends. Take care - you know where we are if you want a day out on the backwaters; it would be lovely. Love J & G.

  5. The time to be scared (very scared) is not when the foster period ends but now! Sue has already visited the kennels in Ockendon (twice) and threatened to take me to the kennels in Bishops Stortford shortly all not helped by Greygal now getting dog No. 26.

She is coming on board with just a few (ie less than 13) greyhounds on Saturday - if the gang fancies a cruise up the Lee discussing rams let us know and get a train down - we will be working a car shuffle so will be able to drop you back onto the right train line!

Everybody has to say goodbye to their dogs at some stage, we are just not good at coping with it but I have to say that having foster boy Lynx has been fantastic.

  6. Would have loved to Richard, especially to crunch over the dimensions of the 'Anglo Saxon' not too difficult a mod, modern day version I suspect would be on the end of a hydraulic ram and disguised underwater!
Jill, is often confused, Greygal and 26 Greyhounds, wants to know whats she has been missing?
